Summary: | swagman "The _swagman_ will come tonight to get you if you aren't good." My mother would say this to us when we were bad. The swagman was described to me as having a long nose with a hook on the end of it, a humped back from looking into keyholes to see if all the children were good, and carrying a sack on his back in which he put all the bad children. It was implied that the swagman would take us away and we would never see our home again. (Originally told in Syrian) DICT CEN. OCT 19 1965 Not used Not used Withdrawn NEWFOUNDLAND FOLKLORE SURVEY |
