It is set off shore, the distance depending on the depth of the water and the nature of the bottom in shoal water. On the shore side of the trap there is an opening or door. From the centre of this opening is a net (the leader) extending to the shore. The entire trap is moored to shore and buoyed up by wooden kegs or cork floats. The principle of the trap is simple: cod moves inshore to feed upon the spawning caplin. As a school of cod moves along the shoreline they encounter the leader, which causes them to turn with the direction of the leader, into the trap . PRINTED ITEM G. M.
