Description
Summary:smut n We also had one for the grate which we called the _"SMUT."_ After the tea dishes were cleared away, we filled the smut and placed it on the pan of the grate. The grates were gothic in design and had an iron pan, circular in shape, with a fairly high rim to keep the ashes from falling out. There were no tiles in front of the grate at that time. When we needed the kettle for supper, it was placed on the trivet. A trivet is an iron stand or support which has three legs and hooks on over the top bar of the grate. Be- cause the kettle had been sitting on the pan of the grate for sometime, it did not take long to boil; in fact when the weather was extra cold, and we had a really good fire going, the kettle often boiled without being put on the trivet. I wonder now why we called that kettle the smut. I guess it was because there were times when the sides did get pretty smutty. In fact. the bottom was always smutty. PRINTED ITEM DNE-cit G. M.
