However, its box like shape made it very useful for carrying large loads. It's chief use was for carrying potatoes from Gillams to Curling, for sale. It was used for this purpose almost exclusively during 1930s. Another cargo carried in this boat was lumber- it too was carried to Curling. It was towed by one or more of the fishing boats - depending upon the load being transported or the speed required. A towing cable was attached to one end for purpose of towing. This was the only thing that made one end resemble a stern. This type of boat has not been used in Gillams since early 1940s.
