Description
Summary:skully n Rhyming with jolly. A large kind of sun-bonnet, made of cotton or shirting, worn by women while haymaking, fishmaking, working in gardens, etc, having a very wide brim covering the neck. It also means a large kind of home-made sou'wester, made of calico & treated with linseed oil, to make it waterproof, used by men out fishing, having the same kind of very wide brim over the neck, & buttoning in front under the chin, so that the hat almost covers the entire skull, except for the face & eyes. A good specimen was recently donated to the Nfld. Museum by Mr. Max Bussey, of Port de Grave. Its spelling: To my mind, this word started off as _skully_, and adjective meaning containing the skull, or, as a diminutive of skull-cap. The Port de Grave speech, in general, renders the short u as o --- for example, people there always say op (rhyming top) for up -- whence skully has become skolly, in pronounciation. DNE-cit Used I Used I Used I scolly, scully, skolly Source listed in DNE as P 54-65.
