It seems as if this shaking had moved some of the pieces apart which before were touching, thus leaving lines of waterways that will be short or interminably long - winding in and out amongst the pans in a mazy many-cornered straggling, and of the most uneven widths. These are what the sealers call the ''lanes'' or ''leads'' of the Floe, whose presence the scunner will always take advantage of just as he will do with the lakes; selecting from afar only those which will result in the Captain's cut being maintained on its proper course.
