Description
Summary:spring2 n Physical and biological oceanographers working at Memorial University.have received substantial financial support for a long-term investigation into the spring phytoplankton bloom in the cold coastal waters of Newfoundland. Their study of the effects of cold temperature on the fate of the bloom could contribute to an explanation of why so many of the world's great ground fisheries, including the Grand Banks, are distributed at middle latitudes. 'spring bloom' in heading: 'Ocean Sciences Centre studies spring bloom.' 'spring diatom bloom' 'the crucial but different period early in the spring bloom, in February and March' ibid Much of the phytoplankton produced during the spring bloom sinks to the bottom--providing a nutrient-rich benthic layer. This phytoplankton detritus may be eaten by creatures living at the bottom, or may be a reservoir of food that is recirculated into the water column over time, extending the period of abundant production beyond the limited period of the spring bloom.
