memory . southern Avalon informants occasionally employ "memory" to mean an embroidered wall-hanging upon which is inscribed the vital statistics of deceased kin. In the absence of family bibles, "memoried" were a ready source of exact data on deceased kin. * In the post-Confederation era printed mass cards have surplanted [sic] them. * [over] [Reverse] * J. H. A Mass card gives no data - only that a Mass will be offered for the soul of the deceased. But many people have "In Memoriam" cards printed, and they request that the receiver pray for the soul of so-and-so, and possibly the date of birth and death. I think these are what Mr. Nemec means. "In Memoriam" cards were used long before Confederation. They probably _supplanted_ the wmbroidered [usually done in cross-stich] "memories". Printed MAss cards - the name of the deceased and the name of the Priest being handwritten - were also in use long before Confederation. DNE-cit. W. J.
