A number of unnamed fishermen were interviewed about the Newfound- land fishery in the early days of this century. One old captain (at least he was called captain) said a "kedgie" was a young boy 12 or 13 years of age on board a schooner who stays aboard with "cookie" (the cook) and the captain while the dories are out on the water. His job is to catch the lines from the dories and ries them up when they come alongsides. Hence'catchie' or 'ked- gie'.
