Summary: | knock up In early teaching days, 1958-62, at St. Mary's, I was telling the children (ages 8-16) about the Lancashire (England) cotton towns & said that in the early morning, a man goes round & knocks up the factory girls. Class reaction - "Ooh! Miss" - & many giggles. Teacher's reaction - When I asked for explanation - they blushed & would not say anything. Friends . . . laughed & gave explanation - to "knock up" here denotes sexual intercourse - & you _don't_ say it! In Lancs - means that the man taps on the bedroom windows with a long pole to wake up the girls to go to work at the mill.
