To this is fastened a stout bridle of walrus hide, through which the seal-skin dogs' traces are looped. The traces are graduated in length so that when negotiating narrow wood-paths, the team can run in Indian file. The leader's trace may be as long as 60 feet. Both the speed and efficiency of a team depends on the leader, who, in most cases, is a female. PRINTED ITEM DNE-cit G. M.
