heed There is an old dialect story that is told about Joe Smallwood when he was the unrivalled star of Newfoundland radio as the Barrelman and people gathered nightly in the homes of those who owned receiving sets to hear him. The story is about a northern skipper man who was being shown around the studios of VONF on the top floor of the Newfoundland Hotel. His guide stopped at one cubicle and remarked: "I'm sure, skipper, you'll be interested in this. It's where the Barrelman broadcasts from and I know you listen to him every evening. "Yes, sir," was the reply. "I _'arks_ to 'im but I never _'eeds_ 'im." The time was to come about ten years later when they did both hark to him and heed him as he sang the siren song of the benefits of Con- federation. But that is beside the point. What interests me today is whether people either hark or heed when a new generation of politicians make the welkin ring as they roar into the microphones of the loud-speaker system in the House of Assembly.
