P. Oh yes. My mother was famous for it. She'd tell me _the Faries_ [PT] was goin' to get me! And all the.the children. But we grew up eventually to not believe in _the Fairies_ [PT] at all, most of the.all the family. HH. How about when you.when she was telling you,did you. ((How did you feel about it???)) P. I was afraid of _the Fairies_ [PT] Matter of fact I used to carry hard bread in my pocket when I'd go to rabbit-snares when I was in . school age.And apparently this was a way to combat them at the same time you could turn your cap inside out or turn your coat inside out in the evening in _the marsh_. Well I suppose as you get older you forget about these things and not worry about it any more, but I know I was really scared at times, especially when I had overstayed and it would be getting late NOW, OR _dark_, an' I'd be walking out and have two or three milse to go in _the dark_; I'd be expectin' to see _a Fairy_ [PT]._a Fairy_ [PT] from any bush or.' HH. Did.did.why did she tell you this? P. Mainly because she would be worried,I suppose,about our going near water and into the hills alone and she thought that if she told us this we'd stay away an' stary near to the house an' she wouldn't have to .THE ANXIETY O' waiting for us to come in the dark,or. (GOIN'??) you know. .or would you say.? HH. .Now this is guessing about your mother there,an' of course it's private informat-ion, but did she believe in it? P. I think she did to a.to an extent. I believe that.I can remember as a matter of fact that when she'd be in [the woods] in the evening,especially berry-pickin' time, she'd have a .she'd.there'd be a.an anxiety,a tension,and that suddenly she'd want to get out o' there in a hurry and she'd make tracks as fast as she could when she [reverse] gathered us together.
