Description
Summary:A3 _Note on the Dialect File- (continued): 3. Form. (a) Printed slips. The key (upper left hand corner) gives the item in the exact form in which it occurs in the citatation.# [sic] The citation gives the bibliographical reference in a form explained in the BIBLIOGRAPHY. The reference is followed by a citation, given exactly. Where the printed source ascribes the item to a specific place, this is given in the upper right-hand corner of the card. At the bottom left is the name of the reader. At the bottom right is the date on which the citation was made. (b) Orally-reported items. The key (upper left hand corner) gives the item in the exact form in which it was reported. The locality (if specified by the reporter) is given in the upper right hand corner. The main entry gives the definition, sometimes with illustration. At the lower left is the name of the reporter; and at the lower right is the date. The sole (conscious) exception is that where the source (e.g. Cartright & Devine) give an item in upper-case letters, it is reduced to lower-case on the card.
