You're only fairly certain of his total catch when he gives his last hail for the trip.' The manager's expectation that something is wrong with his information is sub-stantiated by discrepancies apparent in a comparison of recorded daily hails, the manager's estimates of the actual catch by his 'decoding' of the hail, and the hold log kept by the skipper at approximately the same time. [The indeterminacy of the 'hail' is the result of very guarded radio reports by trawler captains to disguise the daily or period catch of fish so that fellow-captains remain ignorant or uncertain of the productivity of a given fishing ground.] p. 125 note 8 Substantial variation between hail and logged catch is a partial consequence of the schooling characteristics of the diverse species hunted.
