habit [front] . a habit - a costume especially made for the dead to be buried in. (Fig.1) which is supposed to represent the brown scapular but was made to reach the ankles with the belief that if the person had to go to purgatory, only the feet (which were not covered by the shroud) would burn. After the shroud a sort of breastplate. It covered the shoulders and down the back (Fig.2) It was embroidered on the front with a heart and a cross, symbolizing the Sacred Heart, and cross stitching done in white. I don't think this was called a breastplate, however I haven't learned what it was named. A covering of the same material was made for the face. .This special habit which was blesses before [reverse] use, is not used in Renews today but has gone out only about ten years. Both (Fig1) and (Fig 3) were just of plain brown cloth while (Fig 2) was brown enbroidered in white.
