Description
Summary:Avalon According to a seventeenth century biographer, Lord Baltimore, a devout Catholic, 'obtained a charter for. [his] colony under the name of the province of Avalon, so called in imitation of old Avalon in Somersetshire, where Glastonbury stands, the first-fruits of Christianity in Britain, as the other was in that part of America,' the allusion being to the foundation of the abbey of Glastonbury by Joseph of Arimathea, the leader of a group of disciples sent by St. Philip to convert the British.
