There was one handicap [reverse] and that was the goats had difficulty in standing on ice because of their cloven hoofs. Horses had iron shoes, so somebody devised a way of keeping the goats from slipping. Obviously they couldn't be shod, so two pairs of woolen stockings were knit for the goat's legs. At the foot of the stocking a piece of leather or wood studded with shoe tacks was placed. The stockings were pulled up on the goats legs and the "tacks" gave the necessary footing. for the goat.
