Cod are found on both sides of the North At- lantic from the northern Barents Sea south to the Bay of Biscay, around Iceland and the southern tip of Greenland, all the way down to North Carolina. They usually live near the ocean floor and have been caught in water as shallow as six feet and as deep as 1,500 feet. Many cod are found near shore over rough bottom, but the most fa- mous cod grounds are the offshore banks such as the Grand Bank of Newfoundland, Georges Bank, and those around the Faroe Islands and the Lofoten Islands.
