Mrs. Winnie Martin, says that in St. John's a suspender refers to men's garter which hooks to a stocking or to the fourdangling gadgets on a woman's "suspender belt" used to hook on to stockingd when a woman isn't wearing a girdle. The item a man has over his shoulders to hold up his trousers she calls "braces".
