Summary:Gallus Mr. E. Hussey, tailor and World War I veteran, St. John's, Nfld., February 5, 1966. Said he heard a boy from Bonavista use the word "gallus" for suspenders (the article of clothing men use to hold up their trousers if they do not wear a belt). Mrs. Winnie Martin, says that in St. John's a suspender refers to men's garter which hooks to a stocking or to the fourdangling gadgets on a woman's "suspender belt" used to hook on to stockingd when a woman isn't wearing a girdle.
