Summary: | floater n Bell Island is one of the busiest industrial centres in Newfoundland, and gives employment to a larger number of men than does any other industry. Over 2,000 men - sometimes nearer 3,000 - are employed. Many of these reside permanently on the Island, which is itself an individual electoral district under the recent Redistribution Act; but hundreds of them live in the various towns around Conception Bay. These, coming from their homes to work in and about the mines, and returning each week-end, are called "floaters." Bell Island is largely [reverse] the mainstay of a score of settlements that lie within sight of it around the shore of Conception Bay.
