Summary: | fat soap _FAT SOAP_ 1. A supply of animal fat is needed usually sheep's or cow's fat, taken from intestines and abdomen of slaughtered animal. 2. Iron pot is needed. Can be used indoors or outside over open fire. 3. Cut up fat into small pieces and add enough water to cover the fat. Put on the fire to boil. 4. Add 1/2 tin of 'Gillet,' lye. Let the mixture boil for [reverse] about an hour. By this time the fat is dissolved. 5. Add the remainder of the tin of lye. Boil for another 2-3 hours until mixture becomes very thick. 6. Remove from the fireplace and let the soap 'stand' overnight in the pot. 7. Next morning, soap is hard and can be cut into pieces.
