European trade He sailed as a crew member on the first voyage of the RUSSELL LAKE with Captain Harold Ayres of Fortune. She had been built for the European trade. Her first voyage was to Oporto in Portugal. Fish that was cured on the Burin Peninsula and the south-west coast of Newfoundland was mostly caught on trawls fitted with seds and hooks, good large fish which, when sun dried, particularly suited the Portuguese taste.
