Itwwas then brought home/ and split up and down the middle, this process was known as "drawing hoops". The hoops were drawn by the man by sitting on a "drawing mare" and splitting the birch with a drawing knife. After being split into two pieces, the birch hoops were then placed in a shaping ring. In this ring the straight birch would be shaped round to fit the barrel.
