colcannon n With every festive holiday there is usually a special dish. In Renews, the dish that accompanies Halloween is _caulkannon_. To make this you boil potatoes, turnip and cabbage. Strain and mash together with salt, pepper, butter and milk. This is served hot. When kids of about 9-12 we used to greatly look forward to going home from school on Halloween night and having Caulkannon for supper. Now this might be eaten any night of the year but it is only on Halloween that I've heard it called [reverse] Caulkannon. An interesting thing I've found about this is that it is known in Renews and Cappahayden (3 miles away) I haven't learned whether it is known in Fermeuse (3 miles on other side of Renews) but in Ferryland (10 miles from Renews) it is unknown. It must be also known in _Tors Cove, S.Shore_ since last week an ad in the paper said a dance and Caulkannon supper would be held. DICT CEN.
