Summary: | conch n There was a conch shell on board [the bait skiff], a beautiful thing. It was of chalky white on the outside, with creases and ridges and wrinkles around and over its surface. On the inside it was glassey and smooth and shiny, of a pearly colour. It shaded pink and blue and purple. The opening was oblong and a man's hand could be inserted into it with the thumb on the outside as a grip when blowing into its top end. As the skiff was returning in the evening with the bait, a man in the bow blew into the conch shell as a signal.
