collar n When the time came around, about the middle of May, all the crew had to go to work and fit the vessel out for the Summer. (This was called "collar", and for this we recieved no pay.) We had to heave the vessel keel out and paint her bottom, also paint the topsides, etc., and make one trip to St. John's for our salt and general supplies; all this would generally take about a week or ten days; for this trip the men recieved no pay, only their food. Such was the custom of the fishery in those days [1885] all around Conception Bay.
