Description
Summary:cod 2 n The _cod_ could be described as a typical fish. It has a streamlined shape with three dorsal fins, a broad tail, and a small barbel, a whisker- like taste organ under the lower jaw. Its color ranges from gray or gray-green to brick red to almost black. The upper parts are liberally marked with spots, and there is a prominent light lateral line. ->Cod are winter spawners and each female sheds between 3 and 9 million eggs, depending on the size of the fish. Only one or two eggs out of each of the millions from each female survive to adulthood. The pelagic eggs hatch in about two to three weeks and develop into gro- tesque-looking larvae that feed on plankton, and tiny drifting organisms of the sea. Later, when the young cod are about three or four inches long, they descend to the ocean depths to live on the bottom. The adults feed mostly on invertebrates (clams, mussels, crabs, squid) and small fish. But many nonfood items have been found in their stomachs, including boots, can, bits of wood, and even a set of false teeth. PRINTED ITEM DEC 1974 G. M.
