caplin n About the latter end of June, the _Capelines_ make their appearance, going up the Bay along the south Shore, and down again along the north shore, in such abundance as almost to exceed credibility. They are taken with _Capeline_ sayns which cost from 18 to 20 pounds. When that small fish is in the greatest plenty near the shore, they use _cast-nets_ which cost from 15 to 17 shillings. These are cylindrical nets open at both ends the upper end being gathered by a running ball; the catcher holding the upper end in his mouth, opens this lower as wide as possible with his hands, and throws it over the shoal of capeline; then draws is up quickly by the upper end with his hands, [over] [reverse] the balls forming a bottom to the noe not which makes it impossible to the capelin to escape.
