Summary:- The atlas, c. 1821, is a manuscript atlas of Newfoundland's French Shore, attributed to Clair-Desire Letourneur, showing the eastern coast fishing stations of the French Shore from Ha Ha Bay to La Scie; 43 manuscript charts numbered 15 to 57; red and black ink, heightened - with watercolours, also, two loose charts in the same hand. The charts show depth soundings, safe anchorages and - provide details regarding the sizes of vessels that may navigate the harbors, at times noting places in which - military vessels might safely pass. Each fishery is annotated with its production methods and capacity; the number of - fishing boats, the amount of fish dried on stone terraces (graves) and the amount dried on racks (flakes or rances). - -
