The records of the Jubilee Guilds of Newfoundland and the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's - Institutes were deposited with the Archives and Special Collections following a meeting of the - board of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes in June 1991. These papers cover the fifty - year period beginning in 1935 and reflect the work of both organizations. The Jubilee Guilds were - organized in 1935 along the lines of the Women's Institutes in England but it was not until 1951 that they - became affiliated with the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada (FWIC). In August 1968 the name of - the Jubilee Guilds was officially changed to Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes (NLWI) and - the official program of the FWIC was adopted. - - The collection includes annual reports of the organizations, annual and monthly reports from the - Branches, presidents' reports, convenors' reports, convention coverage, financial records, - correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, and various manuscript histories of the organization. - - The records were kept at the office of the Newfoundland and Labrador Women's Institutes in - the Arts and Culture Centre, St. John's. The Collection provides insight into the history of one of the - largest women's service and "self-help" groups in Newfoundland. - -
