Poems contains some 120 pieces, many Christian-themed and covering both Newfoundland and Irish subjects. In addition to traditional topics such as nature and the passage of time, Whiteford also drew inspiration from historical and local community events, such as Wolfe's victory at Quebec, the loss of a sailor at sea, and parish fundraising efforts.
