Description
Summary:An index to the author's genealogical collection of personal names connected with the fishery trade in Newfoundland during 1660-1840. Includes an extensive introduction. -- "For the last seven years I have been collecting information about the overseas commerce of Devonshire and Dorset, with an emphasis upon the Newfoundland fishery [.] personnel engaged in trade for the period 1660-1840 [.] I looked mainly for participation in the Newfoundland trade, but time and the extension of my historical interests led to the inclusion of data on other trades, and the collection of information about persons from outside the West Country - especially London, Bristol, Scotland, The Channel Islands, and the South of Ireland who were connected with Newfoundland. The collection now provides information on some 5,000 surnames comprising thirty or forty thousand individuals; there are hundreds of thousands of separate entries relating to them" (p. [1]).
