This scene depicts John Guy and his men interacting with Beothuk Indians in Newfoundland. The exchange of European goods for native handiwork is shown in the foreground, and is a portrayal of Guy's successful contact with the Beothuk at Bull Arm in 1612, which featured the exchange of gifts and a meal together. The text that accompanied the image when it was first published is a German translation of John Guy's description of the meeting. The image was first published in 1628 in the German version of Volume XIII of the Americae series.
