Description
Summary:Though often attributed to Theodore de Bry (who died in 1598), he did not create it. It was created and published by Merian, who inherited the de Bry publishing business when he married Theodore's granddaughter. This scene depicts John Guy and his men interacting with Beothuk Indians in Newfoundland. The exchange of European goods for native handiwork is shown in the foreground, and is a portrayal of Guy's successful contact with the Beothuk at Bull Arm in 1612, which featured the exchange of gifts and a meal together. The text that accompanied the image when it was first published is a German translation of John Guy's description of the meeting. The image was first published in 1628 in the German version of Volume XIII of the Americae series.
