Commonly referred to as the Treaty of Utrecht, this document lays out the agreements concluding the War of the Spanish Succession, 1701-1713. Each section is presented in parallel text with English. As regards Newfoundland (p. 73-4), it was decided that the island would be a British possession, with the French abandoning all claims and their capital city of Placentia. The French were, however, permitted to fish on the island's northern and western edges, in return for concessions in North America.
