The French were, however, permitted to fish on the island's northern and western edges, in return for concessions in North America. This region would become known as the French Shore, a source of conflict until the 20th Century. (Allison C. Bates, "Treaty of Utrecht," Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, vol. 5, 413.)
