George Warburton was stationed in Montreal as a Royal Artillery officer between 1844-47, publishing Hochelaga anonymously in 1846 with his brother as editor. The travel account went through several editions, promoting a positive view of Canada in the minds of the British public (Elizabeth Waterston, "Warburton, George Drought," Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 8). Volume 1 covers Canada with the main focus on Quebec, with a section on Newfoundland (p. 18-32); volume 2 covers the eastern United States, with some sections on the western regions and Mexico, and concluding with a return to Canada in the last chapter. In addition to travel descriptions, Warburton covers politics, social customs and geography, having as his chief interest the relation between both countries and England.
