James Carmichael was a prominent Nova Scotia shipping magnate who was also active within the Presbyterian faith as well as provincial and national politics, being appointed senator in 1898 (L. Anders Sandberg, "Carmichael, James William," Dictionary of Canadian Biography, vol. 13). Written by his son-in-law, this book consists of a biography, a collection of tributes and letters, a list of electoral results for Carmichael's Pictou County riding, and a list of ships constructed in Carmichael's New Glasgow home town. It also includes a collection of sea tales, although they are not connected to Carmichael; these include the story of the "Wreck of the Micmac" off the coast of Cape Pine, Newfoundland (p. 162-9 : ill.).
