During his military service, Curling served as Aide de Camp for the Governor of Bermuda, where he met Bishop Feild. Curling donated a boat to Feild for use by Anglican missionaries, and then upon his retirement he decided to become a missionary in Newfoundland's Bay of Islands, where he became such an important public figure the community of Birchy Cove was renamed Curling in his honor. Curling spent 13 years as a priest in this part of Newfoundland, and only left to retire to England when his health began to deteriorate. Curling and his wife returned to the island four years later to assume the role of principal of the theological school Queen's College, returning to Europe for good two years later.
