Revised ed. -- Born in St. John's, NL, Ridout grew up to become a Methodist minister in the United States, and volunteered for the Great War as a member of the YMCA. Ridout acted as chaplain to troops on the front lines, preached in the streets of Europe, as well as lectured and distributed religious tracts to soldiers and civilians alike. In light of this, Ridout's autobiography tells the author's experiences in the First World War from the perspective of a chaplain, instead of from the more common perspective of the soldier. Included are many inspirational stories of people Ridout met during the war, battles won and lost, and also interesting experiences Ridout had during the war.
