This book is a history of the Beothuk Indians in Newfoundland, as well as a description of their interactions with European settlers. Chapters include John Cabot's voyage in the 15th century, Jacques Cartier's encounters with the Beothuks in the 16th century, and writings taken from various new sources. Other sections detail the Beothuk manner of living, the country they inhabited, and some examples of the language they spoke. There is also much information on the life of Shanawdithit, the last remaining Beothuk. Several of her drawings are included in this book. Several examples of Beothuk song and poetry can be found in this text as well.
