He grew up in Saint Lewis and spent twenty-six summer fishing from Murray’s Harbour, until the 1992 Moratorium. His father was John Holly of Saint Lewis and his mother was Lavenia (nee Howell) from Spotted Islands. His paternal grandparents James and Sarah (nee Kipenhook) Holly raised John, who was born to Toms that passed away after his birth. His maternal grandfather was Sam Howell.
