His paternal grandparents were Kenneth and Elizabeth (née Powell) Hicks. His maternal grandfather was Elijah Whitt and his paternal grandmother was an Ings before marriage. Lloyd lived in Kettle Cove on South Twillingate Island until the age of sixteen when he moved to Port Hope Simpson to work with his uncle Edgar Norman Hicks.
