He spent a number of summers fishing in Labrador with his father when he was young and on his own when he reached his twenties. He married his wife Irene in 1964 and together they had five children. Rex was primarily a fisherman but also spent some time working in the woods. In 2009, his boat capsized and he spent two days on an ice floe awaiting rescue and has published a book about the incident titled, "Man on the Ice".
