A review of the literature on invented spelling indicates the necessity of teachers understanding the developmental nature of invented spelling and knowing how to react to invented spelling when responding to children's writing. -- In 1988, the researcher distributed a survey/questionnaire to primary teachers of the Avalon Consolidated School Board, Avalon North Integrated School Board, Conception Bay South Integrated School Board and the Roman Catholic School Board for St. John's. The questionnaire contained 18 questions about the respondent's knowledge of and attitude toward invented spelling. The last question asked teachers whether or not they felt a need existed for a handbook on invented spelling. Over 95% (95.69%) felt that a need existed for such a handbook. -- The researcher completed a review of the literature on invented spelling and complied a handbook with relevant information supported in the literature review. The handbook is an appendix to the thesis. Thesis Newfoundland Memorial University of Newfoundland: Research Repository Newfoundland
