The module focuses on life in early Quebec as seen through the eyes of the early inhabitants. -- Slides representing some of the early settlers and explorers were compiled, as well as other slides depicting life in early Quebec. A French language audio-tape to accompany the slides was made. Activities to reinforce the cultural information in the slide-tape presentation and to give the students practice with certain linguistic skills were also developed. -- The materials were then tested for effectiveness. Four grade ten classes participated in the study. A pretest was first administered to determine the level of the students’ knowledge with respect to the material to be covered in the module. Four class periods were spent working with the module, and then a posttest was administered. The question of whether there was a relationship between the use of the module and an improvement in the students’ knowledge of early Quebec, specific linguistic skills, and attitudes were investigated. -- The results of the testing of the module indicated that there was a positive relationship between the use of the module and an improvement in all the cognitive areas tested. With respect to the affective areas tested the results were not as clear; however, students’ attitudes appeared to be influenced positively by the use of the module. -- Results from the teacher questionnaire indicated that teachers were generally pleased with the effectiveness and appropriateness of the module for the grade level at which it was used.
