The SafetyNet Centre for Occupational Health and Safety Research is a community alliance for multidisciplinary research, knowledge exchange and education in occupational health and safety (OHS), based at Memorial University. SafetyNet is dedicated to improving the safety of workplaces and the health of workers in Newfoundland and Atlantic Canada through broadly-based partnerships between academic researchers and stakeholders in communities, government, industry, and labour. Our focus is on multidisciplinary research, knowledge exchange, education and the development of OHS expertise in the province. Each of the four projects we will present was developed by SafetyNet in response to issues raised by community stakeholders and policy makers and undertaken in collaboration with them. The projects are: • The Baie Verte Asbestos Registry (an occupational exposure and disease registry developed for the former employees of the Baie Verte Asbestos Mine); • Safe Wharves (a study of safety issues on the under-regulated and often dangerous community fishing wharves of rural NL); • SafetyNet’s Participatory Ergonomics Toolkit (a multi-media program developed to help teams of employers and employees in small and medium-sized firms assess and improve their work processes and equipment using a minimum of external professional input); • On the Move (a report on the development and progress of a large, multi-year research program funded a Partnership Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to examine the widespread phenomenon of employment-related mobility in Canada and its impact on workers, families, industries and communities).
