Description
Summary:This paper addresses the challenging role of the School Counsellor in the involved school environment. Given the myriad issues students, parents, and teachers deal with on a daily basis coupled with the strain that the lack of resources has created for dealing with the issues. School Counsellors must take advantage of means and ways of effectively delivering their services. The author is of die opinion that consultation does provide a solution to the problems that a lack of resources produces. Included with this report is a literature review on the topic of the counsellor as consultant along with a description of the activities that comprised the internship at a rural elementary and junior high school in Newfoundland and Labrador. -- The literature review focuses on the definition of consultation, why consultation is important, models of consultation, the process, consultative interventions, ethical issues on the topic, and parent education. As an integral part of the author's internship activity at the school but, as well, as a means to satisfy the research component requirement of the internship, the author co-led a parent education group with his field supervisor. Research was conducted on the relationship between parental participation in a parent education group and the self-concept of the children of parents who were members of the group.
