| Summary: | The province of Newfoundland and Labrador is in the process of growing its tourism industry. This expansion is one approach the province is taking to augment the benefits it is receiving through the already existing tourism industry. Developing tourism in rural parts of the island may allow for local communities to benefit from tourism as well. Rural areas such as the Port au Port Peninsula offer unique off-the-beaten-path experiences since they are relatively unmarked by human activities and technologies. These areas offer tourists scenic vistas of undisturbed nature in a safe and secure environment. However, successful and sustainable tourism requires more than a unique landscape. It requires time, planning, commitment, infrastructure, tourism products, funding, and other resources. This paper assesses the viability of developing tourism on the Port au Port Peninsula through an examination of the mentioned factors. |
